Almost exactly ten years ago, you invited me to come to Greensboro and be your pastor. Now, a full decade and many changes later, the time has come for another change. I have accepted a position as Chief of Staff in the Office of the General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and my family and I will be moving to Indianapolis early next year. I am honored to be invited to serve our denomination in this way, and I look forward to working with Rev. Terri Hord Owens as she leads the church into the future.
This was not an easy decision to make. I am excited for what lies ahead, but alongside that is deep sadness at leaving this church and this city. You have loved me and my family well, and it has been a joy and an honor to serve alongside this group of generous, courageous, faithful people. I am proud of the work we have done together, and inspired by the ways God has been at work here. I will always be so grateful for my time with you.
I have let Bill Inmon, our board chair, and Baylee Smith, our personnel team leader, know that my last Sunday with you will be January 27. I will do all I can to ensure as smooth a transition as possible. I’m sure there will be plenty of times for goodbyes between now and then, but for now, I look forward to walking through the Advent season with you. There are candles to light and carols to sing and stories to tell and good news to share.
Thank you for the honor of serving with you. It’s good to be the church together.
