Faith Formation for Adults

August 22, 2018 by Melissa Guthrie

There are so many ways to connect, worship, care, and serve. Where do you fit?

Small Group, Sunday mornings at 9:00

This is a come-when-you can group. Sometimes the conversation flows from one week to the next, but it’s easy to jump in if you haven’t been for a while. This fall, we’ll use a short video series (more on this soon) to start the conversation. The coffee’s always ready by 8:45, so grab a mug and settle in.

Table Topics, Tuesdays at 7:00 (except the first Tuesday of each month) at FCC

This fall, we’ll read and discuss Sacred Signposts: Words, Water, and Other Acts of Resistance, by Benjamin Dueholm. The book explores the importance of Christian practices – like communion, worship, confession, and baptism – in ordinary, everyday life. We need at least five people to commit to this group to make for meaningful conversation. Pick up a copy wherever you buy books, and join in the conversation beginning September 11.

Choir, Wednesdays at 7:00

It’s time to get back into the rhythm of singing in the Chancel Choir. Our kickoff event will be held in the Fellowship Hall on Sept. 5, from 6-7 p.m. with a get acquainted “Mocktail Party” (details below), and choir rehearsal from 7-8:30 and each succeeding Wednesday evening. Come out and enjoy singing familiar songs and learning new music with a dozen or so of your best First Christian friends! We have fun while learning to blend our voices as one in praise to the living God who delights in Psalms and hymns raised up by God’s people.

Enjoy singing such new anthems as “The 23rd Psalm” by jazz vocalist and composer Bobby McFerrin, the lovely and serene “I Shall See” by Michael John Trotta, and the rousing gospel song “He Never Failed Me Yet” by Robert Ray. The chancel choir will also begin preparations for Advent with a presentation of anthems such as “Mary Did You Know?”, and the joyful carol “On Christmas Night” which uses the familiar tune from the Sussex Carol. Come be a part of this exciting and important ministry in the life of FCC.

Choir Mocktail Party, Wednesday, September 5

Join the choir at its Mocktail Party! Happy Hour is from 6-7 and rehearsal is from 7-8:30 in the SingEasy Canteen (aka the Fellowship Hall). Bring some bar food to share. The choir will provide the mocktails.

Vintage Bunch, monthly on Wednesdays

Primarily geared to the interests of folks who are 50-55+, this group meets on the second Wednesday of each month for lunch and a program. Join the Vintage Bunch on Wednesday, September 12, at 11:30 a.m., at the lake home of Jim and Laura Tebow. Bring a covered dish to share. RSVP to the church office to receive directions to their home.

Table Talk, Thursdays at 7:00

A group gathers at a local restaurant or pub or at someone’s home for casual, informal conversation. There is not a planned topic for Thursdays. We show up: some of us eat dinner, some of us have a drink, some of us eat at home and stop by for conversation (or hugs), some of us bring our dog when we’re outdoors. Table Talk serves a meal at a local family shelter once a month. We understand that various environments work better for different folks. Join us every week or when it works for you. Meeting locations are listed on the website and the weekly bulletins.

Leadership Retreat, Saturday, September 8, 9:00-1:00

This event is for all church leaders: board members, trustees, elders, and ministry team members, as well as anyone else who wants to join in the fun. We’ll spend time getting acquainted with our new organizational structures, go over our vision and action plan, and have some time for the ministry teams to meet together. Plus, as always, we’ll worship, play, and break bread together. Sign up for the leadership retreat here.

Men’s Retreat at Christmount, September 28-30

The annual men’s retreat will be held at Christmount from Friday, September 28, thru Sunday, September 30. The Keynote Speaker for the retreat will be Pastor Austin Caviness of the Salem Fork Christian Church in Dobson, N.C. The theme for the weekend is “One,” and will focus on John 17:20-21a. Registration information and forms are available in the church office. Rick Young also has details about the retreat.

There’s more!

Our Outreach Team keeps busy serving in our community. Occasional speakers help us explore our faith. Worship every week keeps us centered. The Agape women’s group will meet on occasion. Men’s and women’s coffee groups are held monthly as is a fourth Friday craft night. Check our website for all events or contact us by phone or email for more info.
