Greetings from Indianapolis! The First Christian crew — Melissa, Shannon, Baylee, Som, Byong, Jonathan, Harper, and me — all arrived at different times but we’re all here now and having a great time.
The big news from here is that last night, we elected Terri Hord Owens as our new General Minister and President. It was an exciting moment when the results of the vote was announced, the crowd on its feet to welcome and support her. As several speakers noted, there is an overwhelming sense that she is the right person to lead this church at this time. You can read more about Rev. Owens and the election here.
That’s the biggest news, but it’s by far not the only thing going on: This morning, I heard an inspiring presentation about stewardship. Melissa sat in on a session about worship. Baylee and Shannon attended a keynote on social justice. Som and Byong have been participating in events hosted by NAPAD (North American Pacific/Asian Disciples). Jonathan made good use of the children’s area during worship. Harper reconnected with one of her camp counselors.
And it’s only the second full day!
The Assembly continues through Wednesday night. We’ll be posting reflections here on our website and photos and updates on our Facebook page. You can also worship with us each evening at 7:30 – each service is live streamed here.
I’m grateful to be part of this church and this denomination. Thank you – from all of us – for your support in getting us here.
More to come!
