From the Pastor
Greetings to you at the beginning of the Advent season. I’ve always loved Advent: the songs, the candles, the decorations, the way that shadows give way to light. I hope you’ll plan to be part of the many ways we’re offering to engage in this season.
As you may know, this Advent season finds our congregation in the midst of some significant changes to our music program. In mid-November, Jody Henley resigned her position as Music Director after nearly 10 years with us. We said goodbye to Jody and celebrated her music ministry in worship on Sunday, November 13 (see the photos on page 3).
In early January, we will also be saying farewell to Genie Jones, who has served as our organist since 2009. Both Jody and Genie have blessed our congregation with their musical gifts through special seasons and ordinary Sundays. Their creativity and talent have guided our worship and have created space for us to come into God’s presence. Their gifts will be missed.
What happens now? Music is and will continue to be a vital part of our congregational life. I am grateful to Genie for her willingness to fill in as Interim Music Director through the Christmas season. She is graciously leading the choir and organizing music for guest musicians, as well as coordinating special services. I’m also grateful to the choir for its flexibility during this transition.
I am working closely with the personnel committee and the worship team to determine next steps. We hope to have a temporary interim music director and organist in place by mid-January. We are also putting together a search committee, which will be tasked with doing some deep evaluation of our music needs. The search committee will be seeking input from across the congregation so that we can explore how music can best enhance and inspire our life together. My hope is that we will be open to new nudges from the Spirit, and that you will be part of the conversation.
If you have any questions about this please don’t hesitate to contact me, Personnel Chair David Barnette, or Worship Team Leader Brenda Huth. Again, I am grateful to Jody and to Genie for sharing their musical gifts with us over these last many years.
