Servant Center

The Servant Center offers food for people in Guilford County who are having trouble obtaining food. People can come to the food pantry and obtain enough food for 3-4 days and they also have volunteer drivers who deliver a bag of groceries to shut-in clients once a month. Please consider picking up an item or two from the list when you go grocery shopping for your own household.

Canned Foods: corn, peas, green beans, carrots, fruit cocktail, peaches, pears, soups, spaghetti sauce, ravioli, beef stew, salmon and tuna.

Bagged/Boxed Food: macaroni and cheese, pasta, oatmeal, cereal, jelly, shelf stable milk, peanut butter.

They are also in need of personal items: deodorant, paper towels, disposable diapers, shampoo, toilet paper, paper towels, and toothpaste.

Blankets and Coats Needed

Thanks to everyone who has brought gently used coats and blankets to give to the families at Glen Haven Apartments. As the days and nights get colder, we will continue to collect more coats and blankets for those families.

If you have gently used blankets or coats please bring them to the church and they will be delivered to the people so much in need.

Many refugee families live in Glen Haven. We delivered book bags and had a popsicle party for the children in August.

Cone Elementary Weekend Backpack Program

Throughout the school year, we will be supplying Cone Elementary School with non-perishable food to be sent home with students who might not have enough to eat over the weekend.

We’re providing four food-filled backpacks each week. We need your continued support for this program for the school year. Please remember the children when you grocery shop.

Consider donating non-perishable, kid-friendly foods like:

Servant Center Holiday Donations Needed

We are trying to supply the Servant Center clients with holiday meals. Here is a list of items to buy for these families: box of stuffing, pack of gravy mix, cans of corn, green beans and yams, pumpkin pie mix and cranberry sauce.

Also, The Servant Center is asking for donations of toiletry items to give to their clients for Christmas. Items such as shampoo, tooth brushes, toothpaste, hair brush or comb, soap, chap stick or other personal items. We will be collecting these items until mid December.

Serving Lunch for Habitat for Humanity – Dec 17

Cone Elementary Backpack Program 2011-12

We are supporting Cone Elementary School again this year. We support the children by providing school supplies at the beginning of the year and with the food backpack program throughout the school year. We need your help in donating school supplies for both of these projects. When you go shopping, please pick up a few items each time. If you don’t want to shop, but would like to help you may make a donation and the Outreach team will do the shopping for you.

You can pick up a school supply list at church or online.

Reconciliation and Anti-Racism Ministry

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has made it a mission priority to become an pro-reconciling/ anti-racist church through experiential education, inclusive worship and intentional dialogue across difference. This ministry offers Youth and Young Adult camps, training programs for leadership development, and resources to promote small group study and community-building.

Our congregation also supports this ministry by providing office space to the Southeast Regional Fellowship (SERF) Reconciliation and Anti-Racism Ministries, lead by Rev. Sekinah Hamlin. Rev. Hamlin travels extensively to regions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the southeast to do this important work. She and her office staff, Jill Berry and Shaina Anderson, utilize one of the offices on our main floor.

Adopt-a-School Project

As the 2010-11 school year gets underway, we are teaming up with another church in our neighborhood to “adopt” Cone Elementary School, part of Guilford County Schools. All the Difference

Mid-summer reflections from our Outreach Intern, Alison Simon:

Reflecting back on our work together so far this summer, I am reminded of a phrase that one of my swim coaches used to say at practice before seemingly impossible sets. (For all of you non-swimmers, a set is basically an hour of agonizing and strenuous swimming.) He said, “When we get to Nationals, you are going to stand on the block and think, ‘This is the set that made all the difference.’” Of course, he said that almost everyday, so by the time we actually got to Nationals, we had months’ worth of sets to reflect on. But he was right. Each of those “insurmountable” sets made a difference, not only in our strength, but also in our attitudes. We enjoyed doing sets that were hard because we knew that they would make a difference in the long run, even though our progress was not necessarily tangible, and sometimes we even seemed to take a step backward.

This summer, through the Summer of Service and the Garden Ministry, we have accomplished so much. We have made hygiene kits for Church World Service and kits for the men at the Servant Center. We have cooked meals, weeded, and picked vegetables…a lot of vegetables. We may not have gotten to see the immediate results of our service, but we know that it will “make all the difference.” The hygiene kits that we sent to Church World Service might make all the difference to a child in Haiti. The fresh vegetables picked and delivered to the Servant Center may make all the difference to a family that cannot get fresh vegetables any other way. The meals that we cooked for members of our own congregation make all the difference to the people who receive them and know that we appreciate them. Each act we have performed with others in mind will “make all the difference” to someone, somewhere. And that is what serving is all about, right? Making a difference. As our summer continues, I challenge you to think about this phrase and know that you can make all the difference.

Mission Trip Dispatch: Friday

An inter-generational group from our church has been on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic this week. Here is their final update:

Today was our culture and fun day. We headed out at 8:00am for the 70 minute bus ride to the orphanage at Monti Christi. After a brief tour, meeting the kids, and getting eaten alive (the mosquitos are much worse there than in Jaibon), we went into the town and toured the English Institute that is operated by Orphanage Outreach. We also visited some
historical sites and shopped for souvenirs before heading to a gorgeous beach for some well earned R and R. After a stop for ice cream, we headed back to Jaibon for dinner and our final night.

This is our final posting, as we head home tomorrow with an ETA of 12:30am Sunday morning at FCC. You can, and should, be proud of our kids. They really made an impact this week. Also this is not an easy place to be, but there has not been one complaint about conditions. But we will be glad to get home! Thanks to everyone whose contributions made this trip possible. We look forward to sharing much more about it at a Third Wednesday Fellowship Dinner later this year.
