The Servant Center offers food for people in Guilford County who are having trouble obtaining food.   People can come to the food pantry and obtain enough food for 3-4 days and they also have volunteer drivers who deliver a bag of groceries to shut-in clients once a month. Please consider picking up an item or two from the list when you go grocery shopping for your own household.

Canned Foods: corn, peas, green beans, carrots, fruit cocktail, peaches, pears, soups, spaghetti sauce, ravioli, beef stew, salmon and tuna.

Bagged/Boxed Food: macaroni and cheese, pasta, oatmeal, cereal, jelly, shelf stable milk, peanut butter.

They are also in need of personal items:  deodorant, paper towels, disposable diapers, shampoo, toilet paper, paper towels, and toothpaste.

‘Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.

More than 20 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with this simple prayer from a single youth group. Since that day, more than $81 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving.”

The CYF and Chi Rho youth group is serving you a free soup lunch on Sunday, Jan. 29, immediately after the 11:00 service. We hope you will join us! If you feel inclined, we will accept donations of canned goods or cash to be given directly to the Servant Center. By participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring, we get to choose the charity of our choice to receive any donations. We hope you will join us, and we thank you for the continued support you give us.

Thank you,
FCC Youth

The Gospel According to Mark

January 15 – February 19

This six-week series will offer an in-depth look at the book of Mark, the first of the four Gospels to be written. In the six week series, we will work our way through the book of Mark, exploring its background and digging into the text itself to explore what Mark has to say about Jesus, his life and work, his disciples and followers, his relationship with God, and his death and resurrection.

If you are looking for a Sunday School class for these coming weeks or if you want to get to know your Bible better, please join us in the Friendship classroom at 9:45.  If you have questions, please contact Thandiwe Gobledale, who will be leading the class.

Mark Sermon Series and Class – Starts Jan 15

The gospel of Mark is generally considered to be the earliest of the scriptural accounts of Jesus’ life. It’s also the shortest— Mark writes with an intensity that shows his passion for the good news. As people of faith, one of our obligations is to be well acquainted with our foundational scriptures, and to be always learning more. To that end, we’re going to spend some time over the next few months digging into Mark’s gospel.

Starting January 15, a new Sunday school class (led by Thandiwe Gobledale) and sermon series (with Lee and Thandiwe) will allow us to learn more about this important book. It doesn’t take long to read Mark in its entirety. Why not get a head start and read it before January 15?

A Prayer for the New Year

Posted by Rev. Lee Hull Moses on January 4, 2012

Offered in worship on Sunday, January 1, 2011:

Holy and Everliving God:
In this year that is only hours old, we are grateful to have gathered in your presence.

The psalmist tells us that your faithfulness is new every morning, and so on this morning when we are especially aware of the newness of our world, our year, we give thanks for your unending faithfulness to us. We give thanks that you make us new again today, this day, this year.

For some of us, we look back at the past year and mourn its passing – the joys and celebrations of 2011 were good ones, and we give thanks for the blessings you offered to us.

For some of us, we look back at the past year and rejoice that it has ended – the sorrows and tragedies of 2011 were deep and piercing, and we give thanks that you walked through it with us.

We look ahead to this next year, and the uncertainty of a new year has the potential to fill us with trepidation for we do not know what to expect… but we pray today that you will fill us with hope – hope for healing of broken bodies, hope for reconciliation of broken relationships, hope for peace in our broken world…. And hope, even, if we are to be so bold, hope that this will be the year that your kingdom will reign.

We pray this day for those among us and around us who are hurting, who are mourning, and we pray that your presence will be a gift and a comfort to them. We pray this day for forgiveness, for we have not always walked in the light of your way – we have rushed past the manger in Bethlehem and hurried on, not paying attention to the good news that lies there waiting for us.

Grant us your grace, merciful God and help us to know your peace.

You are good and holy, a God of unending newness and everlasting light, and so we lift up these and all our prayers to you, knowing that you hear us, praying always in the name of your son, Jesus Christ, our light and our hope.

Amen.
