Remembering and Responding

Like most folks around here, I’ve been keeping an eye on the weather reports and watching as hurricane Earl makes its way north along the coast. I’ve also been thinking back to the summer of 2005, when hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike ravaged the Gulf Coast, and I’ve been praying for the people of Pakistan, who are suffering from horrible flooding. In the midst of all that, I got an update from Amy Gopp, the director of Week of Compassion, which is the humanitarian aid and disaster relief ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

In her update, Amy talks about the incredible response of Disciples in the aftermath of Katrina. Through partnerships with Week of Compassion and other church agencies, more than 11,000 volunteers have put in 437,000 hours of labor to help rebuild homes and churches. I think it’s an incredible honor to be part of a church that responds so quickly and so effectively…. But Amy says it better than I can: Read her report here.
